An extraordinary high-altitude expedition: discover Mount Kilimanjaro through one of its most spectacular and remote trekking routes, with the option of a rare night at Crater Camp, about 5,790 metres above sea level.
This extended expedition follows the mountain's western slopes, crosses the breathtaking Shira Plateau, explores the quieter northern side of the mountain and leads toward the summit of Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. For experienced, well-prepared trekkers seeking an exceptional adventure, the itinerary can also include an overnight at Crater Camp, approximately 5,790 metres above sea level, subject to permits, weather, medical assessment and the guide's safety decision.
The Northern Circuit is renowned for its long approach, panoramic scenery and valuable opportunities for gradual acclimatization. Rather than rushing toward the summit, the expedition allows time to experience the mountain's changing landscapes, from rainforest and moorland to the high alpine desert and the dramatic volcanic terrain surrounding the summit.
At Trust Tours & Safaris, we believe that a successful Kilimanjaro expedition is about much more than reaching the highest point. It is about thoughtful planning, professional mountain support, realistic expectations, suitable equipment and responsible decisions throughout the journey. Our goal is to help every climber experience Kilimanjaro with confidence, respect for the mountain and a clear understanding of the challenges involved.
Important duration information: this Crater Camp version is planned as 11 trekking days plus two hotel nights, making 13 calendar days in total. A conventional 10-day Northern Circuit trek without the Crater Camp overnight can be offered separately. We do not recommend compressing the additional acclimatization, summit, Crater Camp and descent stages into an itinerary that does not allow enough time for a safe descent.
The extended Northern Circuit combines the scenic appeal of a full mountain traverse with additional time for acclimatization before the summit stages. The northern slopes are often quieter than some of Kilimanjaro's more frequently used trails, allowing trekkers to enjoy expansive landscapes and a stronger sense of wilderness.
The Crater Camp overnight adds a rare experience: spending a night close to the summit zone, surrounded by the extraordinary volcanic landscape and, when skies are clear, the stars above Kilimanjaro's glaciers. However, sleeping at approximately 5,790 metres carries serious altitude-related risks. The decision to include Crater Camp must be based on the approved itinerary, climbers' condition, weather and the professional judgement of the mountain team.

11-day climbing
Price per person · includes 2 hotel nights (13 days in total)
| Route | 1 pax | 2 pax | 6+ pax |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northern Circuit + Crater Camp route 11 days | $6,250 | $4,850 | $3,590 |
11 trekking days + 2 hotel nights = 13 calendar days. The Crater Camp night depends on park approval, weather and your guide's safety assessment.
How the prices work
These are proposed planning rates for the extended Northern Circuit expedition with the Crater Camp option. They are per-person prices, not total group prices. The final quotation confirms the authorized route, Crater Camp arrangements, current park fees, accommodation, staffing, meals, transport and the specific services included.
The solo price reflects the higher cost of organising a private expedition for one climber, while two-person and larger groups can share certain operational costs. The price for six or more climbers is a starting estimate and may change according to the final group size, travel dates, accommodation arrangements before and after the climb, and any additional services requested.
These prices are intended for a quality guided mountain expedition rather than a stripped-down budget climb. They are realistic planning prices for 2027–2028. The 2-person rate assumes two climbers booking together and sharing a hotel room. Solo pricing includes the additional cost of operating the expedition for one climber. Larger groups require confirmation of crew capacity and safe guide-to-climber ratios.
Before you pay a deposit, we confirm your final price, payment schedule, cancellation terms and any optional services in writing.
Guides, crew and transport are shared by the whole party, so the more of you there are, the less each person pays. Travelling alone? You can also join a group departure.

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
2,100 m → 2,780 m3–5 hoursAfter breakfast, drive to Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro’s western side and complete park registration. Begin trekking through the lush montane rainforest, where tall trees, ferns, moss-covered branches and changing forest sounds introduce you to the mountain environment. Your guide will set a comfortable pace while the support crew transports the agreed camping equipment, food and luggage.
The forest trail may be muddy or slippery following rainfall, so good hiking boots and waterproof clothing are important. This first day introduces you to the expedition gradually, allowing you to settle into the walking rhythm before the longer high-altitude stages.

Day 3
Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
2,780 m → 3,610 m5–7 hoursContinue climbing from the forest into the heath and moorland zones, where the vegetation becomes more open and the mountain begins to reveal its expansive volcanic landscape. As the trail gains elevation, you may enjoy views toward the Shira Plateau and the summit cone of Kibo when the weather is clear. Your guide will encourage a slow pace and regular breaks to help the group manage the increasing altitude.
After reaching Shira 1 Camp, enjoy a prepared meal and time to rest. The open plateau can be cold and windy, particularly in the evening, so keep warm layers, gloves and waterproof protection readily available.

Day 4
Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
3,610 m → 3,850 m3–5 hours
Today, cross the open Shira Plateau from Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp. Rather than diverting directly from Shira 1 to Moir Hut, the expedition spends a night at Shira 2, allowing you to experience the plateau and build more time into the early acclimatization schedule.
The walk offers expansive views of Kilimanjaro’s upper slopes and, when visibility allows, Mount Meru and the surrounding landscape. Depending on weather, timing and the guide’s assessment, an optional short acclimatization walk may be possible before returning to camp. Any additional walk must remain within the group’s capabilities and the approved route plan.

Day 5
Shira 2 Camp to Moir Hut
3,850 m → 4,200 m5–7 hoursLeave Shira 2 Camp and continue toward the remote Moir Hut area, where the landscape becomes more rugged, open and volcanic. The route moves away from the busier plateau section toward the northern side of the mountain, with broad views across the high-altitude terrain. Your guide will manage the walking pace carefully as you approach elevations where physical effort can feel considerably harder than it would at lower levels.
The day is an important transition between the Shira Plateau and the Northern Circuit’s remote northern traverse. On arrival, enjoy a warm meal, rest and prepare for the additional acclimatization time planned before the higher stages.
- Overnight:
- Moir Hut area (tents)
- Meals:
- Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 6
Acclimatization day at Moir Hut
4,200 mRest + optional guided walkThis additional day is included to provide more time for altitude adjustment before proceeding farther around the mountain. Rather than simply covering more distance, the day focuses on rest, hydration, nutrition and a controlled optional acclimatization walk if the guide considers it suitable. Any walk to a higher point and return must be determined by the guide based on weather, symptoms, the group’s condition and the approved route.
Extra time at altitude can support acclimatization, but it does not remove the risk of altitude illness or guarantee summit success. Climbers should immediately report symptoms such as persistent headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue, breathlessness at rest or difficulty walking normally. Serious symptoms require prompt professional assessment and may require descent rather than further ascent.
- Overnight:
- Moir Hut area (tents)
- Meals:
- Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Included today
- An additional night of mountain camping
- Planned meals and drinking water
- Mountain guide and support crew
- Guide-supervised acclimatization activity if conditions permit
- Applicable camping and park fees included in the confirmed package
Not included today
- Any medical service not expressly covered by the package or insurance
- Personal supplements, snacks and specialty drinks beyond the planned provisions
- Personal purchases and optional equipment not included
- 7
Day 7
Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp
4,200 m → 4,020 m5–7 hoursContinue along the Northern Circuit toward Buffalo Camp, traversing the mountain’s quieter northern slopes. The route passes through high-altitude terrain with sparse vegetation, volcanic features and far-reaching views toward the plains of Kenya when the weather is clear. Undulating ground and the altitude can make the walking demanding, so maintaining a slow, steady pace is essential.
On arrival at Buffalo Camp, the crew will prepare camp and meals while you rest and organize your clothing for the next stage. Your guide will continue to monitor the group’s condition and may adjust the plan if weather or altitude symptoms make further ascent inadvisable.
- Overnight:
- Buffalo Camp (tents)
- Meals:
- Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 8
Buffalo Camp to Third Cave Camp
4,020 m → 3,870 m4–6 hoursToday’s trek continues around Kilimanjaro’s northern side toward Third Cave Camp. The landscape is open and rugged, with changing views of the upper mountain and the surrounding high-altitude wilderness. Although the route may involve less steep climbing than some other sections, the elevation and accumulated exertion can still make the day tiring.
Your guide will encourage regular hydration, eating at scheduled intervals and reporting any unusual symptoms. At camp, enjoy a meal prepared by the mountain cook and rest before moving toward the high camps used for the summit approach.

Day 9
Third Cave Camp to School Hut
3,870 m → 4,800 m4–6 hoursLeave Third Cave Camp and ascend toward School Hut, the high camp used for the summit approach on this itinerary. The trail crosses increasingly exposed terrain as you move into the alpine desert, where temperatures can fall sharply and wind can make conditions challenging. The guide will maintain a conservative pace and assess whether the group is fit to continue to the planned camp.
After arrival, rest, eat and prepare your summit clothing, headlamp, gloves, water and other essential equipment. Your guide will explain the summit schedule, the planned route and the circumstances in which the team may need to delay or abandon the ascent. Reaching this high camp is a significant step, but it does not mean that every climber will be able to safely attempt the summit.
- Overnight:
- School Hut or designated high camp (tents)
- Meals:
- Breakfast, lunch and an early dinner
Included today
- Guided trek from Third Cave Camp to School Hut

Day 10
Summit attempt at Uhuru Peak and overnight at Crater Camp
4,800 m → 5,790 mHighest point 5,895 mHighly variable — many hours at extreme altitude
Begin the summit attempt at the time determined by your guide and current conditions. The ascent toward the crater rim and Uhuru Peak, at 5,895 metres, is physically demanding because the air contains much less available oxygen than at sea level, and cold, wind, darkness and steep terrain can make progress slow. The team will use a measured pace and regular assessments, and any climber showing concerning symptoms may be required to stop ascending and descend.
If conditions and your physical condition allow, reaching Uhuru Peak is an extraordinary achievement and a chance to appreciate the summit landscape of Africa’s highest mountain. The proposed continuation to Crater Camp, at approximately 5,790 metres, is an exceptional high-altitude undertaking and must only take place if specifically authorized and judged safe by the responsible guide team and relevant authorities. The overnight is not guaranteed: weather, symptoms, park restrictions or the guide’s safety assessment may require an alternative descent plan.
- Overnight:
- Crater Camp (tents), only if approved
- Meals:
- Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Included today
- Guided summit attempt under the approved expedition plan
- Mountain guide and support crew according to the agreed staffing arrangement
- Planned food and drinking water for the summit stage
- Crater Camp accommodation only if it is authorized, available and confirmed in the final booking
- Applicable park and camping charges explicitly included in the quotation
Not included today
- A guaranteed summit or Crater Camp overnight
- Unspecified emergency treatment, rescue or evacuation expenses
- Personal summit equipment or additional rental items not listed in the booking
- Any unconfirmed permit, service or special arrangement
- 11
Day 11
Descend from Crater Camp toward Millennium Camp
5,790 m → 3,820 mHighly variableAfter the high-altitude overnight, follow the guide’s instructions for the descent from the crater area toward the designated lower camp, which may be Millennium Camp or another camp selected under the approved itinerary. The descent can still be physically demanding, especially after the summit effort and an overnight at extreme altitude. Your guide will assess your condition before departure and determine whether the planned descent is appropriate or whether a different response is necessary.
The priority is to lose altitude safely, maintain suitable hydration and nutrition, and avoid pushing through symptoms that could indicate altitude illness. The route and timing may change according to weather, trail conditions, the group’s condition and park instructions.
- Overnight:
- Millennium Camp or designated lower camp (tents)
- Meals:
- Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Included today
- Guided descent along the approved route
- Mountain guide and support crew as arranged
- Meals and drinking water according to the planned service
- Designated camping accommodation, subject to the confirmed route
- Applicable park charges specified in the package
Not included today
- Unspecified medical treatment, rescue or evacuation costs
- Personal purchases and snacks beyond the agreed provisions
- Any additional service not stated in the confirmed quotation
- 12
Day 12
Descend to Mweka Gate and transfer to Arusha
3,820 m → 1,640 mDepends on the descent campContinue descending through the mountain’s changing vegetation toward Mweka Gate, where the team will complete the required park exit procedures. Climbers who qualify under the park’s certification rules may receive their summit certificates. Your driver will then transfer you to the hotel in Arusha, where you can shower, rest and celebrate the conclusion of the mountain expedition.
The descent can be tiring even after the summit day, so continue to follow your guide’s instructions and use suitable footwear. Once back at the hotel, take time to recover before your onward flight or any additional travel arrangements.

Safety and acclimatization
Crater Camp is at an extreme altitude where the risk of altitude-related illness is serious. Additional days can provide valuable acclimatization opportunities, but they cannot eliminate the risk or guarantee a successful summit. The itinerary is finalized with the required authorizations and a clear descent and emergency-response plan.
Trust Tours & Safaris accepts participants aged 12–70 subject to individual suitability, applicable park regulations and any required documentation. Every climber should prepare physically, arrange suitable insurance, and discuss relevant health concerns with a qualified healthcare professional before the expedition. Our mountain team's first responsibility is safety, and the guide may change the itinerary, cancel the Crater Camp overnight or initiate descent if conditions require it.
