Our signature Ndutu experience: four nights in the migration zone, giving you far more freedom to follow the herds and watch wildlife behaviour.

Experience one of the most extraordinary chapters of the Great Wildebeest Migration, as huge herds gather across the short-grass plains of Ndutu and the Southern Serengeti. During the calving season, the plains become a vast nursery that attracts lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other predators.

The key difference with this safari is simple: more time in the migration zone. Instead of spending most of the safari driving between destinations, you have four nights in the Southern Serengeti and Ndutu area.

That gives you the freedom to follow the herds and watch wildlife behaviour, and it is especially rewarding for photographers. You also experience Tarangire's elephants and baobabs, the Ngorongoro highlands and the crater along the way.

Instead of measuring the safari by the number of animals seen, this journey is about quality time in the wilderness.

How the prices work

These are indicative private-safari planning ranges per person, based on 2 adults sharing one private safari vehicle and a room. They are not confirmed quotations.

Your final cost depends on your travel dates, the number of guests, camp availability, flight fares and the exact services you choose. Ndutu camps can fill early in the calving season, so we confirm your price and accommodation in writing before you pay a deposit.

To request a price for one traveller or a group of three to six, select your group size in the booking box and Ombeni will quote you directly.

Your private vehicle and guide are shared only by your own party, so the more of you there are, the less each person pays.

Kilimanjaro Airport to Arusha: arrival and safari briefing

Your Tanzanian adventure begins at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), where your Trust Tours & Safaris representative welcomes you and helps with your luggage. You then transfer privately to Arusha, the safari capital of northern Tanzania. The drive is about 50 km and takes around an hour, depending on traffic.

Depending on your arrival time, the rest of the day is yours. Relax, recover from your journey and prepare for the days ahead. Your safari guide will brief you on the route, the wildlife you can expect and what the next day holds.

A warm welcome and a comfortable first evening in Arusha.

Why this night matters: Instead of starting a long safari drive straight after an international flight, you rest first and begin the safari refreshed.

    Day 5

    Ndutu calving season

This is your first complete day dedicated to the migration. You wake before sunrise and leave with your guide to search for newborn wildebeest, large nursery herds and predator activity.

You spend the day exploring different areas of Ndutu instead of rushing back to camp, with a picnic lunch surrounded by the wilderness. Your game drive continues until the late afternoon.

Your first complete day with the herds.

  6. 6

    Day 6

    Ndutu predator and wildlife day

A cheetah walking past a herd of wildebeest on the plains

This is another full day in the migration zone. Today your guide can adapt the route to what you found yesterday. Perhaps the herds have moved. Perhaps predators have been found in a particular area. Perhaps a large group of wildebeest has gathered near water.

Your private safari gives you the freedom to spend more time observing rather than constantly travelling.

Following what the plains show you.

    Breakfast, picnic lunch and dinner
  7. 7

    Day 7

    A deeper Southern Serengeti experience

Wildebeest walking in single file through golden evening light

This extra full day is what makes the eight-day safari so special. You are not forced to leave Ndutu immediately after seeing the migration. You have another opportunity to explore the surrounding plains and follow wildlife movements.

Depending on conditions, your guide may explore around Ndutu, the nearby seasonal lakes and the wider Southern Serengeti. It is an excellent opportunity for photographers.

Watch. Wait. Listen. Follow. Let Tanzania reveal itself naturally. You return to camp after your final sunset game drive.

One more day to follow the migration.

Best time to book a calving safari

December to March is the overall Ndutu season, with January and February the prime calving window. Here is what normally happens in each month.

MonthWhat to expect
DecemberThe migration begins gathering. The herds generally start concentrating in the south as the short rains bring fresh grass.
JanuaryCalving begins. More wildebeest arrive and the first births take place.
FebruaryPeak calving. Normally the core month, with huge concentrations of wildebeest, newborn calves and strong predator activity.
MarchLate calving and transition. Newborn and predator sightings can still be excellent, especially early in the month, but the herds may begin moving north and west.
The exact location of the herds varies with rainfall and conditions, and no wildlife sighting can ever be guaranteed.
