A safari off the usual route: three nights at remote Lake Natron beneath Ol Doinyo Lengai, then the Ngorongoro highlands and crater and three nights in the Serengeti.

This safari shows you a side of northern Tanzania few visitors see. You start at Lake Natron, a shallow soda lake in the Rift Valley beneath Ol Doinyo Lengai, the Maasai's Mountain of God, with flamingos on the water, a gorge walk to the Engaresero waterfall and huge, quiet landscapes.

From Natron, you cross to the cool Ngorongoro highlands and spend a day on the floor of the crater before continuing to the Serengeti for two full days on the plains, looking for lions, leopards, cheetahs and the great herds.

You travel throughout in a private 4×4 with your own driver-guide, and on the last day you return to Arusha by road or by a short flight.

How the prices work

These are indicative planning prices per person, based on 2 adults sharing a room and a private safari vehicle. They are not confirmed quotations.

Your final cost depends on your travel dates, lodge and hotel availability, flight fares and the services you choose, so we confirm the price in writing before you pay a deposit.

To request a price for one traveller or a group of three to six, select your group size in the booking box and Ombeni will quote you directly.

Your private vehicle and guide are shared only by your own party, so the more of you there are, the less each person pays.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

  1. 1

    Day 1

Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport and transfer to Arusha

Our driver meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and takes you to your hotel in Arusha, about an hour away, beneath Mount Meru. The first day is kept free so you can rest after your flight.

Depending on when you land, you can relax in the garden or by the pool. Your guide briefs you on the route, the driving times and what to bring before an early night.

    Meals:
Dinner, depending on your arrival time
  2. 2

    Day 2

    Arusha to Lake Natron

Ol Doinyo Lengai rising above dry grassland and lava flats

After breakfast, you leave the towns behind and drive north into the Rift Valley, through dry savannah, volcanic hills and Maasai country. The road gets rougher towards the lake, and Ol Doinyo Lengai rises ahead, its steep grey cone often streaked white at the top.

You reach your camp in the afternoon, with time for a short walk and photographs as the light softens over the escarpment.

The last part of the drive is dusty and bumpy. Bring sun protection and plenty of water.
    Meals:
    Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  3. 3

    Day 3

    Lake Natron and the flamingos

Flamingos on the shallow waters of Lake Natron

Today is for the lake. A shallow, alkaline soda lake, Natron is one of the main breeding grounds of the lesser flamingo, and at times huge flocks feed in the pink shallows. With your guide, you walk out across the flats to watch them without disturbing them.

Natron isn't a park full of animals. Its appeal is the scenery, the birds and the feeling of being somewhere remote. In the late afternoon, you can climb a nearby hill for the sunset over the Rift Valley.

Flamingo numbers vary through the year, and the birds are never guaranteed.
    Meals:
    Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  4. 4

    Day 4

    The Engaresero waterfall

Sunrise over the Rift Valley from the slopes of Ol Doinyo Lengai

A local guide leads you up the Engaresero gorge, wading through a warm stream between rock walls to a waterfall and pools where you can swim. It's a refreshing change from the vehicle, and a chance to learn how the Maasai live with water in this dry land.

The rest of the day is free at camp, with Ol Doinyo Lengai on the horizon.

The walk involves wading and some uneven ground, and depends on the water level.
Climbing Ol Doinyo Lengai is a separate, demanding night climb. Ask us if you'd like to add it.
    Meals:
    Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  5. 5

    Day 5

Lake Natron to the Ngorongoro highlands

A safari vehicle on a red track beside zebras on the Ngorongoro Crater floor

You leave the volcanic lowlands and drive to the green Ngorongoro highlands, a long journey from a hot, dry world to cool hills and farmland. Your guide explains how altitude and rainfall shape the change along the way.

You arrive at your lodge near the crater with time to rest before an early start.

Driving times vary with the road and the stops you make.
    Meals:
    Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  6. 6

    Day 6

Ngorongoro Crater, then on to the Serengeti

A safari vehicle stopped near a black rhino and its calf

You set off early and descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, a vast volcanic caldera with grassland, swamps and a soda lake. Buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas and lions live on the crater floor, and there's a chance of the endangered black rhino.

After a picnic lunch in the crater, you continue to the Serengeti, watching the highlands give way to endless plains. It's a long day, and you reach your camp in the late afternoon.

    Meals:
    Breakfast, picnic lunch, dinner
  7. 7

    Day 7

A full day in the Serengeti

A lioness and her cubs resting at the base of a tree in the Serengeti

You spend the whole day in the Serengeti with your private guide, starting early when the light is soft and the animals are active. Look for lions on the rocky kopjes, cheetahs scanning the plains, leopards in the trees along the rivers and herds of wildebeest and zebra. A picnic lunch keeps you out on the plains instead of driving back to camp.

For a special morning, you can add a sunrise hot-air balloon flight with a bush breakfast.

The balloon safari costs $600 per person. It's included at High-end luxury level.
    Meals:
    Breakfast, picnic lunch, dinner
  8. 8

    Day 8

    More of the Serengeti

A safari vehicle watching herds on the plains at sunset

Another day in the Serengeti gives your guide time to follow up on the best sightings or explore a new area. In the right season, you head for the herds of the Great Migration; at any time of year, the resident lions, elephants and giraffes keep the days full.

    Meals:
    Breakfast, picnic lunch, dinner
  9. 9

    Day 9

A last game drive and back to Arusha

A light aircraft flying low over wildebeest herds in the Serengeti

After breakfast and, time allowing, a final morning game drive, you return to Arusha. By road, it's a long day through the Ngorongoro highlands with more views on the way; by air, a short flight from a Serengeti airstrip saves many hours.

If your international flight leaves early or the connection is tight, we recommend an extra night in Arusha.

The flight back is included at Luxury level and above, and can be added at Mid-range.
    Meals:
    Breakfast, lunch

Mid-range from $4,095, Luxury from $6,795, High-end luxury from $11,700, Ultra-premium from $20,700 per person, based on 2 adults sharing. These are indicative prices, and your written quote confirms the final figure.

For travellers who like walking, photography and remote places, yes. It gives you a day for the lake and the flamingos and a day for the waterfall, without rushing. If you prefer more game drives, we can shorten it and add a night in the Serengeti.

It's possible as a separate night climb with a local guide, but it's steep, hot and demanding. Tell us if you're interested and we'll explain what's involved.
