A relaxed honeymoon with time to breathe: Tarangire, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, a slow day near Lake Manyara, then five nights on Zanzibar.

Twelve days lets your honeymoon unfold at an easy pace. You explore Tarangire, spend two nights in the Serengeti and a day in the Ngorongoro Crater, all with your own vehicle and private driver-guide.

Before the island, there's a day with nothing to do: a lodge near Lake Manyara and the Great Rift Valley, a pool, a terrace and time to rest. If you'd rather keep exploring, you can add a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park.

Then you fly to Zanzibar for five nights by the sea, with free days, an optional Stone Town and spice tour and a day out on the ocean.

How the prices work

These are indicative planning prices per person, based on 2 adults sharing a room and a private safari vehicle. They are not confirmed quotations.

Your final cost depends on your travel dates, lodge and hotel availability, flight fares and the services you choose, so we confirm the price in writing before you pay a deposit.

To request a price for one traveller or a group of three to six, select your group size in the booking box and Ombeni will quote you directly.

Your private vehicle and guide are shared only by your own party, so the more of you there are, the less each person pays.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

  1. 1

    Day 1

Arrival in Arusha and a quiet first evening

Our driver meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and takes you to your hotel in Arusha, about an hour away, beneath Mount Meru. The first day is kept free so you can rest after your flight.

If you'd like a romantic start, we can ask the hotel for a honeymoon room setup or a special dinner. Your guide then briefs you on the days ahead before an early night.

    Meals:
Dinner, depending on your arrival time
  2. 2

    Day 2

Tarangire National Park: elephants and baobabs

An elephant walking beneath a huge baobab tree in Tarangire

After breakfast, your private guide drives you to Tarangire National Park, about two hours from Arusha. The park is known for its large elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and the Tarangire River, which draws wildlife in the dry season. You may also see giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes and many birds, and lions live here too.

You stop for a picnic lunch in the park and explore a different area in the afternoon, before driving to your lodge near the park.

    Meals:
    Breakfast, picnic lunch, dinner
  3. 3

    Day 3

Through the highlands to the Serengeti

A lone flat-topped acacia tree on golden plains in the Serengeti

A long and scenic day. You climb into the Ngorongoro highlands, past farmland and the crater rim, then drop down onto the open plains of the Serengeti. Depending on the time, you game-drive on the way to camp.

The herds of the Great Migration move with the rain, so we choose your camp to suit your travel month. You arrive in time to settle in before dinner.

The crater itself comes later in the trip, on the way back from the Serengeti.
    Meals:
    Breakfast, picnic lunch, dinner
  4. 4

    Day 4

A full day in the Serengeti

A lioness and her cubs resting at the base of a tree in the Serengeti

You spend the whole day in the Serengeti with your private guide, starting early when the light is soft and the animals are active. Look for lions on the rocky kopjes, cheetahs scanning the plains, leopards in the trees along the rivers and herds of wildebeest and zebra. A picnic lunch keeps you out on the plains instead of driving back to camp.

For a special morning, you can add a sunrise hot-air balloon flight with a bush breakfast.

The balloon safari costs $600 per person. It's included at High-end luxury level.
    Meals:
    Breakfast, picnic lunch, dinner
  5. 5

    Day 5

Leave the Serengeti for the Ngorongoro Crater

A safari vehicle among zebra and wildebeest on the Ngorongoro Crater floor, with the crater walls behind

After breakfast, you game-drive out of the Serengeti and climb back into the highlands to the Ngorongoro Crater. You descend to the crater floor, one of the richest wildlife areas in Africa, to look for lions, buffaloes, hippos, flamingos and the rare black rhino, with a picnic lunch by a hippo pool.

Late in the afternoon, you drive up the crater wall to your lodge, where the cool highland air makes a pleasant change from the plains.

    Meals:
    Breakfast, picnic lunch, dinner
  6. 6

    Day 6

A slow day near Lake Manyara

Flamingos in the shallows of a lake, with zebra and wildebeest walking along the shore

After several early starts, today is for slowing down. You move to a lodge near Lake Manyara, on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, with green hills, farmland and views over the escarpment.

Spend the afternoon by the pool, on the terrace or in your room. If you'd like more wildlife, you can add a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park, known for its tree-climbing lions, elephants and flamingos.

The Lake Manyara game drive is optional and has its own park fee. Ask us to include it.
    Meals:
    Breakfast, lunch, dinner
  7. 7

    Day 7

    Fly to Zanzibar

A light aircraft flying low over wildebeest herds in the Serengeti

After breakfast, you drive to the airstrip at Lake Manyara or Arusha for the flight to Zanzibar, which is included. Our driver meets you at Zanzibar Airport and takes you to your beach hotel.

Settle in, walk the beach and enjoy your first evening by the Indian Ocean. If you've asked for a honeymoon welcome, the hotel prepares it for your arrival.

Light aircraft usually allow about 15 kg of luggage per person in a soft bag. Hotels can store extra bags.
    Meals:
    Breakfast, dinner
  8. 8

    Day 8

A beach day for the two of you

A beach resort pool fringed with palm trees

After the early starts of the safari, today is yours. Swim, read under the palms, use the pool or walk the shore. On the east coast the sea goes a long way out at low tide, so ask the hotel about the best times to swim.

If you'd like, we can book a couples' massage or a candlelit dinner on the beach.

    Meals:
    Breakfast, dinner
  9. 9

    Day 9

Stone Town and a spice farm (optional)

A dhow sailing past a red sunset on the Indian Ocean

Today you can explore Zanzibar's history on a guided walk through Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of narrow lanes, carved wooden doors and busy markets shaped by African, Arab, Indian and European influences. Many travellers add a spice farm to see, smell and taste cloves, cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg.

If you'd rather stay on the beach, that's fine too. In the evening, a sunset dhow cruise is a lovely way to end the day.

The Stone Town tour, spice farm and sunset cruise are optional extras. Add them in the booking box.
    Meals:
    Breakfast, dinner
  10. 10

    Day 10

    Out on the ocean (optional)

Snorkellers floating over a coral reef in clear turquoise water

Spend the day on the water: snorkel over coral reefs, sail a traditional dhow to a sandbank or join a full-day Safari Blue trip in Menai Bay, depending on the tides and the weather. Choose a licensed operator, and we'll book it for you.

Or keep the day free for the beach and the pool.

Boat trips and snorkelling are optional extras. Sandbank visits depend on the tide.
    Meals:
    Breakfast, dinner
  11. 11

    Day 11

Your last full day on Zanzibar

A traditional dhow lit up on the beach at dusk

A day with no fixed plans: a final swim, a spa treatment, some souvenir shopping or a long lunch by the sea.

For your last evening, we can arrange a private dinner or a sunset dhow cruise to celebrate the end of your honeymoon.

    Meals:
    Breakfast, dinner
  12. 12

    Day 12

    Departure from Zanzibar

Enjoy a last breakfast by the sea before our driver takes you to Zanzibar Airport for your flight home, timed around your departure. If your international flight leaves from the mainland, we book the connecting flight and allow plenty of time.

    Meals:
    Breakfast

Best time for a safari and Zanzibar

MonthsWhat to expect
June to OctoberThe main dry season: excellent game viewing in all the northern parks, with the migration in the north of the Serengeti, and sunny, dry days on Zanzibar.
December to FebruaryGreen landscapes and the calving season in the southern Serengeti, with hot, mostly dry beach weather and calm seas.
November and MarchChangeable, with some showers. Wildlife is still good and the parks are quieter.
April and MayThe long rains. Some camps close and boat trips can be affected, but prices are often lower.
The herds follow the rain, so tell us your travel month and we'll choose the Serengeti camp to match. No sighting can be guaranteed.

Good to know before you go

  • Tides: On the east coast, the sea can go out a long way at low tide, revealing lagoons and seaweed farms. The north, around Nungwi and Kendwa, is better for swimming at most tides.
  • Dress: Zanzibar is a mainly Muslim island. Cover your shoulders and knees in Stone Town and the villages, and keep swimwear for the beach and the hotel.
  • Ramadan: Some restaurants open later during Ramadan, and it's polite not to eat or drink in the street during the day.
  • Mnemba: Snorkelling trips visit the reefs around the atoll. The island itself is private, so trips don't land on it.
  • Money: US dollars are widely accepted, but small Tanzanian shilling notes are useful for markets and tips.
