    Day 1

Arrival in Tanzania: Kilimanjaro International Airport to Arusha

Kilimanjaro International Airport, where your Trust Tours representative meets you

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), your Trust Tours & Safaris representative will welcome you and arrange your transfer to your hotel in Arusha. After checking in, take time to rest, hydrate and recover from your international journey before meeting your mountain guide for a detailed pre-climb briefing. Your guide will review the route, explain mountain safety and altitude-related symptoms, check your trekking equipment, and confirm that you have the clothing and essential personal items required for the climb.

This preparation day is important because the Northern Circuit is a demanding high-altitude trek, and starting with suitable equipment and realistic expectations helps you prepare for the days ahead.

    Day 2

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

    2,100 m → 2,780 m3–5 hours

After breakfast, travel toward Kilimanjaro’s western side and complete the necessary park registration procedures at Londorossi Gate. From the trailhead, begin your climb through the lush montane rainforest, where towering trees, moss-covered branches, ferns and forest sounds create a beautiful introduction to the mountain. Your guide will set a steady pace, allowing the group to adjust to walking with a daypack while the support crew transports the main camping equipment and food.

The trail can be damp and slippery in places, so suitable hiking boots and waterproof layers are useful. This first trekking day is generally shorter than the high-altitude days ahead, giving you an opportunity to settle into the rhythm of the expedition.

    Day 3

Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

    2,780 m → 3,610 m4–6 hours

After breakfast, leave the rainforest behind as the trail climbs toward more open vegetation and the broad Shira Plateau. The landscape gradually changes from dense forest to heath and moorland, with expansive views opening across the western side of Kilimanjaro when weather permits. Walking steadily and avoiding unnecessary rushing is especially important as you gain altitude; your guide will encourage a comfortable pace and regular hydration.

Arriving at Shira 1 Camp, you will have time to rest, enjoy a freshly prepared meal and appreciate the mountain scenery. The transition to a more exposed environment may bring stronger winds and cooler temperatures, so keep warm layers and waterproof clothing accessible.

    Day 4

Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

    3,610 m → 3,850 m3–5 hours
A Trust Tours & Safaris climbing team and crew with the company banner on Kilimanjaro

Today, continue from Shira 1 Camp across the Shira Plateau to Shira 2 Camp. On this itinerary you do not travel directly from Shira 1 Camp to Moir Hut. The walking route crosses an open high-altitude landscape shaped by Kilimanjaro’s volcanic history, with wide views toward the mountain’s upper slopes and surrounding plateau. Depending on weather and visibility, you may see dramatic contrasts between the pale alpine terrain, dark volcanic rock and the snow-capped upper mountain.

Although this day may be shorter than later sections, altitude can make even moderate walking feel demanding. Use the time to walk slowly, drink regularly, eat well and listen to your guide’s instructions. Your guide may adjust the walking rhythm or rest schedule according to the group’s condition and weather.

    Overnight:
    Shira 2 Camp (tents)
    Meals:
    Breakfast, lunch and dinner

    Included today

    • Guided trek from Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

    • Personal camping or trekking equipment not explicitly included
    • Optional activities or private services outside the itinerary
  5. 5

    Day 5

Shira 2 Camp to Moir Hut

    3,850 m → 4,200 m4–7 hours

Leave Shira 2 Camp and continue toward the northern side of the Shira massif, following the trail toward the Moir Hut area. This section takes you through increasingly remote high-altitude terrain, where vegetation becomes sparse and the landscape is dominated by volcanic features, open slopes and broad mountain views. The day is designed to move the expedition farther around Kilimanjaro while building experience at altitude; the guide will manage the pace carefully and schedule breaks as needed.

Conditions can become colder and windier as you gain elevation, so layered clothing, gloves, a warm hat and reliable waterproof protection are important. The exact walking duration and final camp arrangements depend on the route condition, weather and the park-authorized itinerary.

    Overnight:
    Moir Hut area (tents)
    Meals:
    Breakfast, lunch and dinner

    Included today

    • Guided trek from Shira 2 Camp toward the Moir Hut camping area

  6. 6

    Day 6

    Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp

    4,200 m → 4,020 m5–7 hours

Continue eastward and around the northern slopes, traversing a remote section of Kilimanjaro that is one of the defining features of the Northern Circuit. The scenery is more open and rugged than the rainforest encountered at the start, with expansive views across the northern side of the mountain and, in suitable conditions, toward the Kenyan plains. The trail includes undulating terrain, and the combination of distance and altitude can make the day physically demanding even when the path is not technically difficult.

Your guide will maintain a steady walking pace, monitor how everyone is responding to altitude and help the group manage energy for the remaining days. On arrival at Buffalo Camp, settle into camp, enjoy a hot meal and prepare for another day along the mountain’s northern traverse.

    Overnight:
    Buffalo Camp (tents)
    Meals:
    Breakfast, lunch and dinner

    Included today

    • Guided trek from the Moir Hut area to Buffalo Camp
    • Professional mountain guide and supporting crew

  7. 7

    Day 7

Buffalo Camp to Third Cave Camp

    4,020 m → 3,870 m4–6 hours

Today, continue across the northern slopes toward Third Cave Camp, enjoying the distinctive open landscapes and long-distance views that make the Northern Circuit so appealing. The route generally crosses high, dry terrain with sparse vegetation and a strong sense of wilderness, although cloud, wind and temperature can change rapidly. Because you have already spent several days at altitude, it is important to continue walking slowly, eating regularly and reporting headaches, nausea, unusual fatigue, dizziness or other symptoms to your guide.

Reaching Third Cave Camp brings you closer to the eastern side of the mountain and the final approach to the summit zone. The crew will prepare camp and meals while you rest, keep warm and prepare your equipment for the next day.

    Day 8

Third Cave Camp to School Hut

    3,870 m → 4,800 m4–6 hours

After breakfast, leave Third Cave Camp and climb toward School Hut, the high camp used for the final summit approach on this itinerary. The landscape becomes more exposed as the route approaches the upper mountain, with volcanic rock, alpine desert and wide views across the surrounding slopes. Walking slowly is essential because the altitude is now substantial, and your guide may adjust the pace or rest schedule to suit the group’s condition.

On arrival at School Hut, rest, eat an early dinner and organize your summit clothing, headlamp, water, gloves and other essential equipment. Your guide will give a detailed summit briefing, explain the planned departure time and review the importance of following instructions during the night ascent. Adequate rest is valuable, although sleep may be interrupted at this altitude.

    Overnight:
    School Hut (tents)
    Meals:
Breakfast, lunch and an early dinner

    Included today

    • Guided trek from Third Cave Camp to School Hut
    • Mountain guide and support crew
    • Camping accommodation and meals according to the expedition plan
    • Drinking water provision as specified in the package

    Not included today

    • Personal summit clothing, headlamp, batteries and other personal equipment unless rented or supplied under a written agreement
    • Personal snacks, electrolyte products and special dietary items beyond the planned provisions
    • Personal expenses and crew gratuities

    Day 9

Summit attempt at Uhuru Peak and descent to Millennium Camp

    4,800 m → 3,820 mHighest point 5,895 m10–15 hours or longer
A climber at the Uhuru Peak summit sign in the snow, 5,895 m

The summit day begins very early, usually around midnight, subject to the guide’s assessment of weather and conditions. Follow your guide up the steep upper slopes toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim and continue toward Uhuru Peak, at 5,895 metres, if conditions and your health allow. This is the most demanding part of the expedition: the cold, darkness, steep terrain and reduced oxygen availability can make progress slow, so the team will use a careful pace and regular checks rather than rushing toward the summit.

If you reach Uhuru Peak, take time for photographs and to appreciate the extraordinary achievement of standing on Africa’s highest point. The guide will then lead the descent toward the designated lower camp, typically Millennium Camp on a 9-day Northern Circuit schedule, subject to the approved itinerary, weather, group condition and park instructions. The summit push and descent can take many hours, and reaching the summit cannot be guaranteed; your guide’s safety decision takes priority over reaching a particular point.

    Overnight:
    Millennium Camp (tents)
    Meals:
    Summit-day provisions and dinner

    Included today

    • Summit attempt under the supervision of the mountain guide team
    • Guide and crew support, subject to safety and park procedures
    • Mountain meals and drinking water according to the planned summit-day provisions
    • Camping accommodation at the designated descent camp
    • Applicable park fees specified in the confirmed package

    Not included today

    • Guaranteed summit success, which no responsible operator can promise
    • Personal summit equipment or rental items not specified in the quotation
    • Emergency medical treatment, evacuation or rescue costs beyond the scope of the package and insurance arrangements
    • Personal expenses and crew gratuities
  10. 10

    Day 10

Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate and transfer to Arusha

    3,820 m → 1,640 m4–6 hours

After breakfast, descend through the mountain’s changing vegetation toward Mweka Gate. As you lose altitude, the landscape gradually returns to forest, and the air becomes warmer and more humid. At the gate, complete the required park procedures and receive your summit certificate if you qualify under the park’s certification rules. Your vehicle will then transfer you back to Arusha, where you can shower, relax and celebrate the completion of your Kilimanjaro expedition.

This final trekking day is an opportunity to reflect on the effort, teamwork and determination required to complete the Northern Circuit. Although the summit attempt may be over, the descent can still be tiring, so appropriate footwear, steady walking and following the guide’s instructions remain important.

    Overnight:
    Hotel in Arusha

    Breakfast
