Day 1
Arrival in Tanzania – Hotel Check-in and Mountain Briefing

Welcome to Tanzania! Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will meet your representative if airport pickup is included in your booking and transfer to your hotel in Moshi or another agreed location.
After checking in, take time to rest after your journey, organise your personal equipment and prepare for the adventure ahead. Your mountain team will explain the trekking schedule, review the equipment you need, answer your questions and discuss important safety considerations, including altitude sickness, hydration, pacing and the importance of informing your guide if you feel unwell.
Your equipment check is particularly important because temperatures and weather conditions change dramatically as you ascend Kilimanjaro. Suitable hiking boots, waterproof clothing, warm layers, gloves, a headlamp and a sleeping bag are essential items to prepare before starting the trek.
Enjoy your hotel stay and prepare for an early start the following morning.
Important note: Airport transfers are included only if confirmed in your package.- Overnight:

Day 2
Machame Gate to Machame Camp – Trek Through the Rainforest
1,800 m → 2,835 m10–11 km5–7 hoursAfter breakfast, travel to Machame Gate on the southern side of Kilimanjaro. Your guides and support crew will complete the required registration and prepare the mountain equipment before you begin walking.
The trail enters a lush tropical rainforest filled with tall trees, thick vegetation, moss-covered branches and birdlife. This first trekking day introduces you to the mountain gradually, although muddy sections, humidity and uneven ground can make walking more demanding than expected.
Your guide will encourage a steady pace rather than rushing. Regular breaks allow you to drink water, adjust your clothing and become comfortable with your walking rhythm. As you gain elevation, the forest gradually changes, offering your first impression of Kilimanjaro’s remarkable ecological diversity.
Upon reaching Machame Camp, your crew will organise the campsite, prepare your evening meal and help you settle in. Use the evening to rest, eat well and prepare for the next stage.

Day 3
Machame Camp to Shira Camp – Explore the Open Mountain Landscape
2,835 m → 3,750 m5–6 km4–6 hours
After breakfast, leave the rainforest behind and climb through heathland and moorland towards the Shira Plateau. The landscape becomes more open, with shorter vegetation, volcanic rock formations and increasingly expansive views of the surrounding mountain terrain.
The route is steeper in places, so maintaining a slow and consistent pace is important. Your guides will encourage you to take your time, drink regularly and pay attention to how you feel as the altitude increases.
As you approach Shira Camp, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic. On clear days, you may enjoy impressive views across the plateau and towards the higher slopes of Kilimanjaro. The change from dense forest to open mountain terrain makes this one of the most memorable stages of the climb.
At camp, your crew prepares the campsite and meals while you rest and recover. Your guide can discuss the following day's route and explain why the itinerary includes a higher-altitude excursion before descending to Barranco Camp.

Day 4
Shira Camp via Lava Tower to Barranco Camp – Climb High, Sleep Low
3,750 m → 3,960 mHighest point 4,630 m10–11 km6–8 hoursToday is one of the most important days for acclimatisation. You cross the Shira Plateau and gradually ascend towards the Lava Tower area, reaching approximately 4,630 m, before descending to Barranco Camp at around 3,960 m.
This “climb high, sleep low” approach allows you to experience a higher elevation during the day while spending the night lower down. It can support acclimatisation, although it does not prevent altitude sickness and should never replace careful monitoring of your health.
The trail passes through the alpine desert, where the landscape becomes rocky and exposed, with sparse vegetation and wide mountain views. The ascent can feel demanding as the air becomes thinner, making it particularly important to follow your guide's pace rather than competing with other climbers.
After the Lava Tower area, descend towards Barranco Camp. The change in elevation provides an opportunity to recover before the next day's climb over the famous Barranco Wall.
Upon arrival, enjoy a warm meal, drink fluids as advised and rest. Your guide will explain the route ahead and discuss how to approach the following morning's ascent safely.

- Barranco Camp (tents)
- Meals:
- Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 5
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp – Cross the Famous Barranco Wall
3,960 m → 4,035 m5–6 km4–5 hoursWake up to the spectacular mountain scenery surrounding Barranco Camp before beginning the ascent of the Barranco Wall. This well-known section is a highlight of the Machame Route, with sections requiring careful foot placement and the use of your hands for balance.
Your guide will help the group move carefully through the more challenging sections, allowing climbers to concentrate on the trail rather than rushing. Although it looks dramatic from below, the usual route is a guided mountain hike and does not generally require technical rock-climbing equipment under normal trail conditions.
After reaching the top of the wall, continue across the mountain's ridges and valleys towards Karanga Camp. The trail includes further ascents and descents, so this day requires patience and a steady pace even though the distance is relatively short.
Karanga Camp is an important overnight stop in the seven-day itinerary. By staying here rather than continuing directly to Barafu Camp, you have a more gradual schedule before the summit approach.
At camp, enjoy your meal, rest and prepare your equipment for the following day's ascent to Barafu Camp.
- Overnight:
- Karanga Camp (tents)
- Meals:
- Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 6
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp – Reach Base Camp for the Summit Attempt
4,035 m → 4,673 m4–5 km3–5 hoursAfter breakfast, continue ascending towards Barafu Camp, the high camp used for the summit attempt. The landscape becomes increasingly dry and rocky, with less vegetation and more exposed terrain as you approach the upper mountain.
Although the distance is relatively short, the elevation makes it important to walk slowly, take breaks and conserve energy. Your guides will monitor the group's condition and provide practical advice as you approach the high camp.
Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, enjoy an early meal and prepare your summit clothing, headlamp, gloves, warm layers, water and other essential equipment. Your guides will explain the summit schedule, weather considerations, route conditions and the importance of communicating any symptoms of altitude sickness.
You will normally rest early because the summit attempt begins around midnight or during the early hours of the following morning. Good preparation at this stage can make a real difference to your comfort during the cold and demanding hours ahead.

- Barafu Camp (tents)
- Meals:
- Breakfast, lunch and an early dinner

Day 7
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Mweka Camp – Summit Day
4,673 m → 3,100 mHighest point 5,895 m12–16 hours or more
Today is the most demanding stage of your Kilimanjaro expedition and the moment many climbers have been preparing for over months of training.
You normally begin the summit attempt around midnight, climbing slowly through the darkness with your headlamp illuminating the trail. The ascent towards Stella Point is steep and physically demanding, and the combination of cold temperatures, fatigue and high altitude makes patience essential.
Your guides will set a careful pace and monitor how you are feeling. Take small steps, breathe steadily and communicate openly if you experience symptoms such as a severe headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual breathlessness or confusion. Your safety takes priority over reaching the summit.
If your condition and the mountain conditions allow, continue from Stella Point along the crater rim towards Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m, the highest point in Africa. Reaching the summit is a remarkable achievement, offering an extraordinary sense of accomplishment and the opportunity to take photographs at the Roof of Africa.
After celebrating, begin the long descent via Barafu Camp towards Mweka Camp. Descending requires care because tired legs and loose volcanic gravel can increase the risk of slips and falls. Your guide will help the group maintain a controlled pace and monitor climbers during the descent.
This is a very long day, often taking approximately 12–16 hours or more. Some climbers may need to turn back before reaching the summit because of altitude symptoms, weather or exhaustion; this is an important part of responsible mountain safety.

- Mweka Camp (tents)

Day 8
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Return to the Hotel
3,100 m → 1,640 m8–10 km3–5 hoursAfter breakfast, begin the final descent through the lush rainforest towards Mweka Gate. After several days in the alpine environment, the warmer air, green vegetation and forest atmosphere provide a welcome change.
The trail can be slippery after rain, so take care on the descent and follow your guide's instructions. At the gate, complete the required park procedures and arrange your summit certificate according to your achievement and the park's rules.
Your driver will transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or another agreed location if this service is included in your booking. Once you arrive, enjoy a well-deserved shower, relax and reflect on your experience climbing Kilimanjaro.
This is also a good time to discuss any optional safari or Zanzibar arrangements if you would like to extend your stay in Tanzania.
